COMMUNITY GRANT
Brewster Historical Society
Brewster, Massachusetts
The following is a testimonial from famed New England author, Sally Gunning.
The circa 1799 Captain Elijah Cobb House in Brewster was unheated, shuttered, and going downhill fast when a generous donation from the Jennison Foundation enabled The Brewster Historical Society to purchase and restore the property. Brewster is known as the Sea Captains Town — by the mid 1800’s fifty sea captains lived here — but not one of their showcase homes was open to the public today. With the help of the Jennison Foundation, BHS was able to change all that. Now residents, visitors, school groups, and numerous other community organizations are able to tour the house and property, learning about life in the heyday of sail, and about the history of Brewster. The historic gardens, also funded by the Foundation, have provided Brewster with a treasured place for reflecting on past and present. The community has expressed their joy over this renovation with increased visitation, increased membership in the Society, and increased financial support. From everyone in the community, thank you Jennisons!
